Many modern Cambodians have begun to follow western traditions of honeymooning. There are many five star hotels and gorgeous resorts in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. In addition, beach towns like Sihanoukville and Kampot are a popular spot for newly weds. Siem Reap is also very popular. Those with money can travel to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, or China for their honeymoon.
A marriage in Cambodia is not simply the union between the groom and the bride, but also a strong union between two families. One must refer to their mother and law as "mother", and father and law as "father". You must treat your in law as if they were your parents. Family is everything in a Khmer marriage. In a traditional marriage, the husband usually move in with the wife's family. In today's fast pace environment, a wife can just as easily move into the husband's family. In addition, more and more couples are moving out of the family. Even though moving out is an option, many chose to live with their elder parents in order to take care of them.
Unlike the Western world, Khmer parents expect at least one child to live with them, even when they are married. An old home, or a nursing home would be an insult to a traditional Khmer parent. After marriage, the newly wed is expected to work hard in order to contribute to the family.
